Lower-Northern Convocation Lenten Movie Series 2012

Wednesday Nights, beginning at 6:00 PM

February 29 – “The Crucible” at St. Paul’s Kent. This is a movie adaptation of the 1952 play by the American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a dramatization of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay from 1692-1693. Miller wrote the play as an allegory of the McCarthy years, when the US government blacklisted accused communists. The original play won the Tony Award for “Best Play” in 1953, and has become an American classic.

March 7 – –"Smoke Signals" at St. Luke’s. On a Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, reservation, not much changes -- until the estranged father of Victor Joseph dies in Arizona, and Victor must go collect the cremated remains. Trouble is, Victor can't afford the fare. But annoying nerd Thomas Builds-the-Fire will float Victor a loan … if Thomas can tag along. This story of  forgiveness is based on acclaimed author Sherman Alexie's short stories.

March 14 – "Remember the Titans" at Shrewsbury Parish. In this film, based on real-life events, Denzel Washington replaces a well-respected -- and white -- football coach in an Alexandria Virginia high school, circa 1970. It is the first year that the school will have students of mixed races, and the city is filled with anger and fear. As the boys on the team are molded into a team, the adults around them also have to deal with thinking about each other in new ways.

March 21 – "October Sky” at Emmanuel Church, Chester Parish. This film tells the true story of Homer Hickam. In 1950's mining town called Coalwood, Homer is a kid with only one future in sight, to work in the local coalmine like his father. However in October 1957, everything changes when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik goes into orbit. With that event, Homer becomes inspired to learn how to build rockets. With his friends and the local nerd, Homer sets to do just that by trial and a lot of error. Unfortunately, most of the town and especially Homer's father thinks that they are wasting their time.

March 28 – “Pay it Forward” at St Paul’s, Centreville. Young Trevor McKinney, troubled by his mother's alcoholism and fears of his abusive but absent father, is caught up by an intriguing assignment from his new social studies teacher, Mr. Simonet. The assignment: think of something to change the world and put it into action. Trevor conjures the notion of paying a favor not back, but forward--repaying good deeds not with payback, but with new good deeds done to three new people. Trevor's efforts to make good on his idea bring a revolution not only in the lives of himself, his mother and his physically and emotionally scarred teacher, but in those of an ever-widening circle of people completely unknown to him.

April 4 – “Babette’s Feast” at St. Stephen’s, Earlville. In 19th century Denmark, two adult sisters live in an isolated village with their father, who is the honored pastor of a small Protestant sect. Although they each are presented with a real opportunity to leave the village, the sisters choose to stay with their father, to serve him and, after he dies, to serve the members of their church. After some years, a French woman refugee, Babette, arrives at their door and moves in with them as their cook and housekeeper. Many years later, she is able to repay their generosity when she comes into some unexpected funds.
